Good news -- SCLS tech staff will begin rolling Windows 10 out to new staff PCs in January!
Why wait until now for Windows 10?
We wanted to wait for the "anniversary update" (1607) to make sure things are stable, many of the quirks are worked out, and we'll have better software and hardware compatibility than when Windows 10 was first released.
Which staff PCs will get Windows 10?
NEW staff PCs and eligible staff PCs that come in for service/re-imaging will receive Windows 10.
When will we get Windows 10 on patron PCs?
Windows 10 on patron PCs will be our next big project and should be happening in upcoming months. With Windows 10 deployed to staff PCs first, library staff will have a chance to become familiar with 10 before it's rolled out to patron PCs.
What can we expect in the way of changes?
Windows 10 will be very similar to Windows 8, with some minor changes and additional features. Here's a run-down on some of the more notable ones:
- Start menu - The start menu will look a little different. Everything will still be there, it will just be re-arranged.
- Recent documents - The way recent documents display in the start menu will be different. Instead of seeing all recent documents listed together in the start menu, you'll need to first click on a program and then you'll see the recent documents associated with that program.
- Standard Windows 10 interface - We have made very few changes to the Windows 10 interface -- what you'll see is mostly what Microsoft has designed.
- Cortana - Cortana will be available.
- Edge - The Edge browser will be included in addition to Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer.
- Action Center - The new "Action Center" will be available in the system tray for notifications and quick settings.
- Windows Store - The Windows store will be available and staff can add apps. Just like anything else, though, you probably don't want to add personal accounts for the Windows store to a shared work computer.
Where can I find out more about the features listed above?
Microsoft and many other websites have a lot of information about Windows 10 and its features. Some of the new Windows 10 features that will be available on staff PCs will also be covered in upcoming TechBits posts.
