Now that the dust has settled and all SCLS member libraries have wireless service, I thought I'd share with you what happened last week and where both legacy wireless and Enterprise wireless stand.
Public IP is still AWOL
It's now been over two weeks since the disappearance of Public IP (http://publicip.net/). Their website continues to be down, and all phone numbers we can find have been disconnected. I think it's safe to say that they no longer exist as a business entity.
Most of the conversations we can find from other former Public IP customers confirm the need to move on to a more robust, secure, and feature-driven solution.
Enterprise wireless update
During the wireless outage, the SCLS Technology Team was able to install Enterprise Wireless at 8 new locations, bringing our total of installations to 17. The Technology Team continues to perform the necessary site assessments and we hope to have most, if not all interested libraries who meet the requirements done by the end of the year. Next week, the team meets to discuss the various report options available for libraries.
Legacy wireless update
Over the course of two days last week, the Technology team was able to repair the wireless services for over 20 libraries, not counting the Enterprise Wireless installs. One question that has come up is whether this is a temporary solution and whether South Central is looking for a replacement for Public IP. Since the vast majority of our libraries are looking at Enterprise Wireless as their wireless service, it does not seem cost effective to research, test, price and pilot a completely separate service in the future. We will continue to support the legacy wireless system installed at the few libraries who will not be moving to Enterprise Wireless but at this point we do not have plans to replace it with another system.
