On Wednesday, September 7th, the SCLS Technology Committee met here at SCLS headquarters. You can read the entire minutes from the meeting online but I thought I would bring a couple items to your attention:
The Technology Committee voted to amend the SCLS Network Policy with the following items:
SCLS-approved, programmable satellite switches may be permitted on the
SCLS network for existing building infrastructures under certain
circumstances. A detailed description of pros, cons and SCLS support may be found at http://www.scls.info/technology/support/satellite_switch_support.pdf
Wireless services:
1. Wireless services offered by SCLS are not intended or designed to be a
replacement for network cabling
2. Business-critical devices on the SCLS network should be wired
3. Non-wireless devices will not be retrofitted to become wireless devices
As the SCLS Technology Team moves forward with both the Network convergence project and the Enterprise Wireless service, having the appropriate policies in place prior to implementation allows both the staff at SCLS and member library staff to understand the issues with each service and make the necessary changes needed so that confusion will be avoided down the road.
Though we're very excited about Enterprise wireless and are impressed with its reliability and up-time, member libraries participating in the service should not view wireless as the way to connect business critical devices (such as self-check gates or circulation PCs) to the network.
