The cataloging rules "Resource Description and Access" (RDA) have the potential to transform the ways libraries create, use and share their data. Based on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), RDA moves away from the "unit card" or document approach to catalog entries, and toward an entity-relationship model. Over the past year some cataloging departments have been testing RDA as a set of rules for creating library data. At the same time, technical developers have been experimenting with RDA as data, and in particular as linkable data for the Semantic Web. The speakers will cover these parallel developments, and talk about some possible future directions.

The Internet offers a treasure trove of free resources that can greatly expand the range of information and services that libraries can offer their patrons.  But it's not always easy to find the best information to meet users' needs.  In this program, Michael Galloway, Manager, Digital Collections for ipl2: Information You Can Trust, and John Mark Ockerbloom, editor of The Online Books Page, will give a tour of some of the millions of books, magazines, journals, and informative web sites that can be accessed online for free.  They will discuss how they evaluate and describe online resources to include in their directories, how readers can find what they need in these directories and elsewhere online, and how they can distinguish useful information from unreliable or irrelevant sites.   You'll find out how you can integrate free online resources with your local library offerings in ways that give patrons better service than either online or print alone can provide.   And you'll also learn how your library and your patrons can contribute to this growing corpus of knowledge.

He will introduce the major mobile technologies and outline their usage as well as the cultural shifts that accompany their introduction into information society. Joe will lead us through an exploration of the opportunities for libraries to implement mobile technologies to enhance or supplement traditional services and collections, and will explain how libraries can most strategically engage these tools as well as the mobile culture. We will discuss the real world changes this means for libraries and the new skills we may have to learn in this evolution. At the conclusion of this session we will all be familiar with how to best meet this shift towards mobile technologies in our libraries.

Librarians know that the target of keeping technologically current is always moving, and budgets are static at best.  Each year, College of DuPage teleconferences dedicates one program that takes a look at future technology trends and gives librarians an important basis for their planning efforts.  Libraries are both adopters and innovators, and are increasingly looking beyond the library environment for technological innovations and solutions. 

This teleconference will address the current status of technology in the library and explore future technological trends as more information sources--and people-- migrate to online environments. Eric Lease Morgan, Head of the Digital Access and Information Architecture Department, University Libraries of Notre Dame, and Marshall Breeding, Director for Innovative Technologies and Research for the Jean and Alexander Heard Library at Vanderbilt University and Executive Director of the Vanderbilt Television News Archive, will explore libraries’ technology future.

Information Literacy Education: A National Overview

DVD recording now available for Information Literacy Education: A National Overview. This program originally aired on Friday, March 12, 2010 with Dr. Lisa Stock, Dr. Jean Donham and Dane Ward.

When President Barack Obama declared October 2009 as National Information Literacy Awareness Month, Information Literacy received national attention. The declaration stated: “In addition to the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic, it is equally important that our students are given the tools required to take advantage of the information available to them.” He asked “people of the United States to recognize the important role that information plays in our daily lives, and appreciate the need for a greater understanding of its impact.”

In this context, Lisa Stock, Dean of Learning Resources at College of DuPage, and Jean Donham, College Librarian, Cornell College (Iowa) will give a background briefing on the working standards and assessments for national literacy and open a dialog on what librarians can do to strengthen efforts to encourage and build information literacy efforts not only in your own library, but in concert with your colleagues around the country.

Librarians are justly proud of their accomplishments in organizing the world’s published information through the use of standard subject headings and the ubiquitous, demanding MARC record.  But, with the explosion of more information stored electronically, are our old standards still relevant today?  Has keyword trumped the subject heading?  Librarians also see their roles changing as more information description and metadata production are handled by other professionals.   Will online tagging or vendor descriptions diminish the need for librarians?  Questions are rife on what exactly are the thrust of RDA and the new AACR2?

Renee Register, Senior Product Manager at OCLC and Karen Coyle, noted consultant and leader in the area of digital libraries will review current cataloging practices and discuss the future of metadata, the MARC record, the Resource Description and Access standard, and the librarian's place in online information organization and access.

Costs rise while budgets and our buying power shrink. And if we want to innovate, the incorporation of new formats and technologies taxes our budgets even further. Librarians, traditionally used to budgets with modest or no growth, now face steep cuts.

In the face of insufficient funding, libraries reduce hours, cut subscriptions, step up their resource sharing efforts, engage in consortial buys, outsource where possible, use staff more creatively, deal more aggressively with vendors, boost fundraising efforts, mount advocacy campaigns, seek open source solutions, seek input from focus groups to prioritize services, and even merge with other libraries...

Join Leslie Burger, Director of the Princeton (NJ) Public Library and founder of Library Development Solutions, and Alice Calabrese-Berry, Executive Director of Metropolitan (Chicago) Library System for a discussion of best ways to deal with these difficult budget trends. Millennials in the Library

The Millennial Generation, Generation Y, Echo Boomers, Digital Natives, and the Trophy Generation are all terms used to describe people born in the United States between the early 1980s and the late 1990s. Shaped by a heady mix of culture, politics, and technology, "Millennials" have had an unprecedented exposure to mass media, pop culture, instant communication, and cultural freedom woven together by a complex technological net.  Jennifer Kushell, President of the YSN.com (Your Success Network) and author of "Secrets of the Young and Successful," will explore the social impact Millennials will have on our culture and specifically on our libraries.  Having worked extensively with this powerhouse, global generation, Jennifer will answer the questions: Who are Millennials? How do they interact with information and technology? In what ways can our libraries better serve them as patrons, students, and staff?
