LGBTQ+ 101

Equitable and inclusive service throughout the community is a foundational principle for library service. LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and other gender and sexual identities) people are present in all communities rural, suburban, and urban. Over the past several years, book, display, and program challenges concerning LGBTQ+ people and topics have skyrocketed. Library staff may be wondering, “How can we create a safer more inclusive environment for all?”

In this webinar, presenters from OutReach LGBT Community Center of Madison, WI will provide an overview of:

How and why people self-identify matters

• What it means to be LGBTQ+, including gender identity and expression
• How to be an effective ally to the LGBTQ+ community
• Ways to create inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ people

A Culture of Accessibility and Inclusion - Going Beyond the ADA in Your Public Library

This program will explore practical ways to ensure people with disabilities, of all ages and identities, are welcome and able to enjoy all your public library has to offer. Topics will include:

• Physical space and environment: Layouts, displays, furniture and equipment.
• Programs and Services: Assisting patrons with a various disabilities, and ensuring library staff and volunteers are prepared.
• Community events, and library programs: Addressing barriers to in-person events, as well as offering accommodations.
• Web and Social Media: Ensuring images, videos, and site navigations don’t exclude disabled patrons from programs and services.
• Discussion: Participants will have time to share good and bad examples from their libraries, as well as implementation ideas they have as a result of the webinar.
