Around The System
Sending out a SCLS welcome to Tammy Smith, the new director at Jane Morgan Memorial Library in Cambria. Tammy married her high-school sweetheart, Tim, and taught at Cambria-Friesland Schools as a special education teacher for 39 years. She has two black labs, Lucky and Stormy, and two grown daughters, Nicky and Katey, both married with two dogs each - granddogs. This coming January, Tammy and her husband, will welcome their first grandchild, a boy! Tammy enjoys singing in community and church choirs, planning and judging at county fairs, quilting, knitting, and crocheting. Welcome Tammy!

Dictionaries are helpful when you can't find a definition in the text of the law, or you need more context about how a word is used. The library has several print dictionaries, and recently added many online dictionaries through HeinOnline. Read more

CCBC Starred Review Days – November 13-17
The Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC) is hosting its annual Starred Review Days November 13-17.
Librarians and teachers are welcome to come for hands-on book examination of 2023 books we’ve received that have one or more stars in the following journals: Booklist, Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books, Horn Book, Kirkus, and School Library Journal. We will also have books selected to-date for CCBC Choices 2024 on display.
- November 13-16: 8:30 am – 7:00 pm
- November 17: 8:30 am – 2 pm
You must RSVP if you plan to come.
Niche Academy Training Changes
The new Homeless De-Escalation Core Training has been set up on Niche Academy.
The following trainings are included in the Core Training:
- Homeless De-Escalation 101: Trauma & the five most important seconds of conflict
- Homeless De-Escalation 201: Nonverbal tools to eliminate conflict
- Homeless De-Escalation 301: Preventing conflict
- Homeless De-Escalation 401: Managing your own emotions during conflict
- Homeless De-Escalation 501: Verbal tools for conflict
The stand alone trainings (Homeless De-Escalation 101-501) will be removed from Niche Academy on October 6.
If your staff watched these 1-hour stand alone trainings and need to download their certificate(s), please have them do so by THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5.
OLD CORE TRAINING
The old 3.5-hour Core Training will be removed on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 31.
If any of your staff have started the training, please have them complete it, take the quiz, and download their certificate before that date.
VIDEO CLIPS FOR STAFF MEETINGS
A new “training” has been added to Niche Academy which contains video clips from our trainings that you can show at staff meetings. They are less than 7 minutes long and cover a wide range of topics. We hope you love this new tool for your managers!
