Talk of the Town available
The May edition of CW 57’s Talk of the Town is now available (see below). It features Sauk City Library Director Ben Miller talking about some of the unique kinds of resources and services public libraries make available top the communities they serve.
Earlier this week there was another episode of Talk of the Town recorded, but it is not yet available on YouTube. In that episode, Jenny Carr and James Ramsey talk about seed libraries. We’ll share that video as soon as it is available on YouTube.
The June Talk of the Town will feature Shawn Brommer, SCLS youth services consultant, who will talk about the importance of summer reading, and will explore the many other youth literacy efforts in which public libraries are involved.
MPL’s Christner will discuss STEM and STEAM programs for 3- to 4-year-olds
Madison Public Library’s Carissa Christner will be the co-presenter of a Novelist webinar scheduled for May 27 at noon (1 p.m. ET).
In 2012, Christner set out to create a program for 3- to 4-year-olds that encouraged play-based STEM explorations. Find out more about this program (called WonderWorks) and the lessons Carissa learned along the way in this one-hour webinar. Don't think you like Science, Technology, Engineering and Math? Join this amazing program and you'll be inspired to try STEM programming in your own library even, if you don't have all of Newton's Laws memorized and have forgotten how to calculate the area of a circle. Most STEM or STEAM programs offered at libraries are aimed at school-aged participants, so this is a great opportunity to learn about exciting programming options for younger children.
You’ll even receive marketing strategies and Readers’ Advisory materials to help you cross promote your collections and reach your community.
Joining Christner in the program will be Nancy Dowd, co-author of Bite-Sized Marketing and product manager for LibraryAware.
Laura Rose, assistant director and youth services librarian at the Marshall Community Library, is now writing for Horse Illustrated Magazine. She authors articles in the Readers Rant section of the monthly magazine. Topics include riders wearing earbuds, attending horse shows, and more. “Getting published, and getting paid for it, is awesome,” says Laura.
Have your library patrons ever wanted to throw pie in your face? Raina Roloff, the director at North Freedom Public Library gave that opportunity on Pi Day (March 14) as a fundraiser for her library. Tickets were $5 each or five for $20 for a chance to throw a pie at the director, who took five pies to the face that night. The library raised $727, and there was also a pie eating contest. You can see more photos on the North Freedom Facebook page. “It was a neat and fun experience,” Roloff said. “We had over 100 people attend, with many requests to have the pie social again, with or without the pie throwing.”
