Register now for Sept. 21 System Celebration
System Celebration 2010 will be held Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the Wintergreen Resort & Conference Center in Wisconsin Dells, and online registration is now available at www.scls.info/about/systemceleb/. Printed invitations have been mailed to all library trustees, member libraries, and others.
There will be a social hour from 6-7 p.m., featuring entertainment provided by the Wisconsin Dells High School Jazz Ensemble. Dinner is scheduled from 7-8 p.m., and the annual awards program will be from 8-8:30 p.m.
There is no charge for local elected officials, head librarians (or designee) of member libraries of all types, and current trustees of SCLS area library boards. You do have the option to pay for your meal if you believe there is an ethical conflict with SCLS paying for your meal. The meal cost for spouses/guests and other attendees is $20, and must be sent by Sept. 7 to South Central Library System, 4610 S. Biltmore Lane, Suite 101, Madison, WI 53718-8345.
This year's menu includes a choice of Chicken Chardonnay, Roast Sirloin, or Pasta Primavera (vegetarian). If using the online registration option, all questions must be answered before you can submit the form. If you are using the paper registration, remember to indicate your meal preference.
Please remember that if SCLS is paying for your meal, and you register but do not attend, we must still pay for your meal. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your reservation before Sept. 13 (there can be no meal refunds after this date). If you must cancel after Sept. 13, please arrange for someone else to attend in your place. The registration deadline for System Celebration 2010 is Sept. 7, and all library staff members, trustees, elected officials and other library supporters are invited to attend.
We’re still in need of library photos for a slide show to be played during the social hour. We’re especially interested in photos from the past 30 years. You should send photos to Mark Ibach by Aug. 31.
SCLS ‘Learning Day’ scheduled Oct. 21
Focusing on the topic of managing change, SCLS member library staff are invited to gather Oct. 21 for a “learning day” at the Lussier Family Heritage Center in Madison.
This is the replacement for our “Annual Meeting,” which was typically held in the spring. Under our new governance structure we have the All Directors meeting in the spring, so we’re holding this new in-service opportunity in the fall.
The morning speaker, Jennifer Reddemann, will discuss how to manage change. Following lunch (which is provided), attendees will share in a discussion about library advocacy, after which they will have the opportunity for informal discussions with colleagues around general topics of library service.
Mark your calendars now for Oct. 21. More information will be coming in the near future, but you can register now through the SCLS Calendar.

The July 2010 LINK Library Statistics Summary is posted on Automation's website. Both PDF and Excel versions of this report are available.
Dane County Cultural Affairs has awarded Middleton Public Library a $2,000 grant toward the “Join The Fold” origami mural project. This grant, added to the Japan Foundation grant of $5,000, the Pleasant Rowland Foundation grant of $5,000, and community donations, means the project is nearly funded. There will be a Sept. 20 kickoff event, featuring performers from the Japanese delegation at 5:30 p.m. The workshops will begin after the performance.
Maureen Palmer, director of the Kraemer Library and Community Center in Plain, has accepted the position of Circulation Supervisor at Reedsburg Public Library. She will begin her new duties there on Oct. 4. Maureen’s last day in Plain will be Sept. 10. Maureen was the youth services librarian at Reedsburg for 10 years before becoming the director at Plain on Jan. 1, 2004.
Reedsburg Public Library has put a collection of more than 5,000 historic images from Reedsburg, LaValle, Loganville, Rock Springs, Plain and Ironton online via Flicker. This was an idea from library patron Paul Schonfeld, who received a grant from Sauk County UW Extension Arts and Culture Committee to make it possible. Director Sue Steiner said this will give the library’s historic photo collection more exposure, and they hope encourage sales of the images.
Tracy Herold, director of the Sun Prairie Public Library, was a guest of Joy Cardin on Wisconsin Public Radio on Monday, Aug. 2. Tracy talked about libraries as the place to be, following up on a national public radio program that said public libraries will be the next big cultural wave. You can hear Tracy’s interview at www.wpr.org.

SCLS is hosting the webinar “Disney's Methods for Results: Keys to Recruit, Select & Recognize the Best“ on Monday, Aug. 23, from noon to 1 p.m. If you’re interested in attending, please be sure to register so we have room for everyone interested.

This webinar will peel back the curtain and reveal the secrets about how your organization can apply what Disney has created and use it for your success. What can you learn from a mouse? The 60-minute webinar will cover the following.
- Apply Disney's tools to your organization & drive stronger performance
- Disney training strategies to promote & achieve organizational goals
- Keys to implement Disney's recruitment & retention secrets for your success
- How to hold employees accountable -- Never let "Backstage Come Onstage"
We'll meet in the Badger/Chester Rooms over the lunch hour to watch the webinar together -- there will be an opportunity to ask questions during the program. Bring your lunch, and SCLS will have beverages and dessert for you.

New Wisconsin wetlands publication available
The Wisconsin Wetlands Association recently published a new, full-color guide to Wisconsin’s 100 Wetland Gems -- high quality habitats that represent the wetland riches (marshes, swamps, bogs, fens, and more) that historically made up a quarter of Wisconsin’s landscape.
The full-color book features beautiful materials highlighting the diversity and importance of these wonderful wetlands, including a statewide map and one-page fact sheet for every Wetland Gem, all in a convenient, spiral-bound collection. The book (150 pp, $25) may be of interest to Public Libraries, particularly those located in communities near Wetland Gems sites.
Because the Wisconsin Wetlands Association is a small non-profit organization with limited resources, it has done a small printing of this publication and has not obtained an ISBN number for it. To obtain a copy of the publication, complete the online order form.
For more information, contact Katie Beilfuss, outreach programs director, at (608) 250-9971.
