Information about SCLS office name and delivery code
Now that the SCLS Administration and SCLS Automation offices have combined at one location, we wanted to come up with a new name for our office at 4610 S. Biltmore Lane. We will be calling this location "SCLS Headquarters."
Our three-letter delivery code will be SCA, so when sending items through Delivery for any staff at SCLS Headquarters, please be sure to use SCA, not "SCLS" or "SCL." Do not use qualifiers such as the Administration or Automation.
Shared database subscription information
Not all SCLS member libraries will subscribe to all of the shared databases in 2010, so the look of the “Online Resources by Name” page at www.scls.info/resources/name.html will be modified to reflect this change. This will take effect on Jan. 4, 2010.
Libraries have been informed of their 2010 renewal prices, and will be invoiced for these amounts in January by WiLS (Wisconsin Library Services). If you are uncertain which databases your library is renewing in 2010, you will want to speak to your library director, or in some cases the person responsible for database renewals at your library. The best way to see which libraries are subscribing to which databases is to consult the “Online Resources by Name” page beginning Jan. 4.
Here are several important items regarding database renewals and access:
- “Home library” determines access -- Authentication for remote access to the databases will be based on a user’s home library, beginning Jan. 4. For LINK libraries, this information will come from the “home agency” field in the patron’s LINK record. This is a change from previous practice, in which authentication was based on a patron’s PSTAT.
- LRC renewal date -- For libraries that currently subscribe to Literature Resource Center (LRC), that subscription ends Aug. 16, 2010. Because of this, if your library decided not to renew LRC for 2010, you still have access until Aug. 16, and the “Online Resources by Name” page will reflect this. On Aug. 17 we will change the authentication, and the page, to remove access to LRC for those libraries that opted not to renew for 2010.

The Ebling Library for the health sciences on the UW-Madison campus has created a "WMJ Physician Obituary Database." The database is an index of obituaries printed in the State Medical Board of Wisconsin's official publication, the “Wisconsin Medical Journal” (WMJ) from 1903 until 2008. The database does not contain full obituaries, but it is helpful for Wisconsin residents researching family members who may have practiced medicine in the state during the past century. If you would like a copy of an obituary listed, please contact your inter-library loan department at your local public library or college/university, or patrons are welcome to view the journal in person at Ebling Library. Ebling is open to the public, but you should check the library’s website concerning parking. The call number for “WMJ” is Q 7W73. (Please see Historical Services staff for volumes 1-32). For more information, please visit the "WMJ Physician Obituary Database" at http://ebling.library.wisc.edu/historical/obits/index.cfm.
A recent post to the Blog “Is That All The Stuffing?” was very complimentary to SCLS Delivery and Monona Public Library.
If you read the Online Update from Sept. 18, 2009 (Vol. 7, No. 19), you heard about Spring Green Community Library’s entry into the “Mr. Billy Contest.” This music video was a follow-up to the Mr. Billy concert the library sponsored on July 29 as part of its Summer Library Program. Mr. Billy challenged the library to enter the Mr. Billy Concert Contest, and some patrons stepped-up to that call. The young people in this video worked very hard to make this happen. They came up with the song, created the props, and learned the words and choreography. The library just learned that it won the contest, and therefore is entitled to a free performance by Mr. Billy. You can see the winning video at www.springgreenlibrary.org. Thanks to South Central Library System staff members who helped make this video link possible.

New phone number for Harriet (Telecirc)
Starting Nov. 20, 2009, the Telecirc ("Harriet") phone number changed to (608) 242-4700. Please note this change for library patrons that want to call Harriet to renew items, or to review their list of holds, items checked out, or items overdue.
The Telecirc phone number is listed online at www.scls.lib.wi.us/brochures/telecirc.html. You can also navigate to it from the main LINKcat webpage by clicking on the “Help, News, Questions” tab and then by clicking on “LINKcat Help.” On this page you will see the title “Accessing LINKcat,” and the first link below that is “Telephone Access.”
As a reminder, you also can encourage patrons to sign up for e-mail notification for holds. If patrons have specific problems related to LINKcat, they can contact SCLS through an online form at www.scls.lib.wi.us/linkcathelp/suggestions.html.
Another change as a result of the recent office move is a new help desk phone number, which was effective Nov. 20. Please keep in mind that the SCLS Help Desk phone number should not be given out to library patrons. This number is solely intended for library staff when they need assistance.
Library Legislative Day is Feb. 16
It’s never too early to build relationships with elected officials at the state level, and the Feb. 16 Library Legislative Day is the perfect opportunity to make a significant start.
Developing and nurturing these relationships is an important part of any library advocacy plan, and the Wisconsin Library Association’s Library Legislative Day is the perfect time to take action. Scheduled Feb. 16, 2010, the day begins at the Inn on the Park in Madison, and later moves to the State Capital for legislative visits. Speakers in the morning session will provide an overview of legislative issues affecting libraries, and will share tips on how to maximize your time with legislators.
In 2009, the SCLS Public Library Advisory Committee (PLAC) set a goal of having 25 percent of all member libraries attend Library Legislative Day. That goal was reached, and this year we’d like to exceed that level of library participation. We’d also like to double attendance this year, so libraries are encouraged to bring along a resident, elected official, student, Friend, or trustee. Even if you can’t attend, prepare a packet and send it to your legislators with a note explaining the important role your library is playing locally. You can also participate virtually.
The cost to attend is $15, which covers printing, refreshments, and space at the Inn On The Park. An optional box lunch is also available for an additional $15. Information about the 2010 event has been posted to the WLA website, and we encourage you to reserve the date and make plans to attend.
Library Legislative Day is co-sponsored by the Wisconsin Library Association and the Wisconsin Educational Media & Technology Association. Tony Evers, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, will be one of the featured speakers.
TEACH modifies rate structure
Beginning Jan. 1, 2010, TEACH will no longer impose incremental fees for bandwidths over 10Mbps. Bandwidths from 256K to 3.0M will continue to be billed at $100 per month, but all bandwidths from 3Mbps to 100Mbps will be just $250 per month regardless of how that bandwidth is divided between video, internet transport, WAN and WAN HPLL.
In order for these rate and policy changes to be financially sustainable, all requests for increases will be approved strictly based on demonstrated need. They will not be automatic.
As is customary, TEACH customers will be asked to justify additional service prior to any TEACH-subsidized bandwidth increases.
Under this new rate schedule, those customers currently paying over $250 per month for their TEACH-subsidized BCN service will automatically have their rate reduced beginning in January.
To request additional bandwidth, South Central staff will complete the Service Change Request Form for libraries connected to the LINK network. We will send a copy of the request along with a graph or chart of current usage and a brief written justification for the increase to TEACH.
If you have any questions regarding how this rate change will affect your school or library, or need assistance obtaining a usage graph, please e-mail TEACH at [email protected] or call (608) 261-5054. Libraries on the LINK network should direct questions to Greg Barniskis.
For general information regarding TEACH visit www.teach.wisconsin.gov.
