SCLS director gathering scheduled May 20
The next SCLS Director's Gathering will be held Wednesday, May 20, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the SCLS Administration Office, 5250 E. Terrace Drive, Suite A-2, Madison. We'll have coffee, bagels, and fruit from 9 to 9:30 a.m. and start the discussions at 9:30 a.m.
As we've done before, there isn't an agenda for the meeting so bring your questions, success stories, or topics you'd like to discuss and share with your colleagues. All SCLS directors are invited.
Andy Barnett, Assistant Director of McMillan Memorial Library in Wisconsin Rapids, spoke at the WiscNet Future Technologies 2009 conference on May 6. His presentation was titled "Re-use, Re-purpose and Re-mix" and covered using Google Maps, Flickr and Print on Demand options to repurpose the Library's local history materials. The presentation is available online at www.mcmillanlibrary.org/library/wiscnet2009.ppt.
Brodhead Memorial Public Library will be hosting an open house, Sunday May 17 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tours of the new library, located at 1207 25th St., will be given. Music will be provided by the Juda Jazz Band at 2:30 and 3:30, and the Friends of the Brodhead Library are providing refreshments.
The April 2009 Circulation Statistics reports have been posted at http://automation.scls.lib.wi.us/reports/circulation/monthly/200904/. You can also view individual reports from previous months.
An Open House Reception will be held on Thursday, May 28, from 4-8 pm at the Lodi Public Library to introduce and welcome the new co-directors, Kristine Millard and Trisha Priewe. The Lodi Woman's Club is hosting the event on behalf of the community. Refreshments will be served and guests also will have the opportunity to purchase $1 raffle tickets for a chance to win one of a dozen prize baskets. Raffle proceeds help support the library's magazine and newspaper subscriptions.
Poynette Area Public Library welcomes Katy Hanousek as the new part-time Children's Librarian/Library Assistant 1. She previously worked as a circulation clerk at the DeForest Area Public Library.
‘Speak Up for Your Library’ cards available; online registration encouraged
The expanding state budget deficit and continuing economic downturn are dominating state and national news, making all the more important that libraries cultivate a base of library supporters who are willing to “speak up.”
About 1,700 people have done just that, but with more than 800,000 residents living within the counties that comprise the South Central Library System, there is more outreach work that needs to be done. If your library isn’t already distributing the SCLS “Speak Up for Your Library” cards, now is the perfect time to start.
All that’s required of libraries is to prominently display the orange sign-up cards (available free of charge from Mark Ibach), or place a link on your library website to our online registration at form at www.scls.info/pr/speak_up/. We have a small “Speak Up For Your Library” logo available for this purpose.
If you choose to use the cards, simply collect them at your library and return them to Mark Ibach at SCLS through Delivery. That’s all there is to is. The names on this list also can be used by individual libraries to reach out to local residents when the need arises.
If you have questions about this ongoing campaign, need more printed materials, or would like the email addresses of library supporters in your community, contact Mark Ibach at (608) 246-5612.
SCLS launches Koha development blog
If you would like to see the first Koha development projects the LINK Implementation Committees will be working on, read the new blog post on http://scls.typepad.com/link2koha/.
Remember, you can read our weekly blog posts by signing up for an RSS feed, an email reminder, or by adding it to your blog reader.
Library value calculator includes return on investment calculation
Your library’s patrons value the services and resources you provide, and helping them understand just how much those services and resources are worth may pay you significant dividends in the future? How much would they pay out-of-pocket if the library didn't exist, or if these services and resources were only available for a fee?
We encourage you to have your patrons reflect on their library use over the past month, then plug those numbers into the form at www.scls.info/pr/calculator/. This page will calculate a total value related to the items checked out and the services and resources used.
More importantly, this form also calculates a "return on investment" that is based on the per capita library expenditures in your community, as reported on the 2006 Wisconsin Public Library Statistics compiled by the Division for Libraries, Technology and Community Learning (DLTCL). This feature is made possible thanks to some nifty .html code created by the Library Research Service, a unit of the Colorado State Library and the Colorado Department of Education that is operated in partnership with the Library and Information Science (LIS) Program, Morgridge College of Education, University of Denver.
In essence, the more patrons use the library each month the higher their return on investment will be.
When your patrons have completed the form, encourage them to share some of their findings and impressions with us by submitting the online form. They also will have the opportunity to share some stories about their library use and why they believe the library is important to them and their family.
Check out how Oregon Public Library chose to make the library investment calculator an integral part of its website.
Space still available on ALA Conference bus
The American Library Association Annual Conference will be held in Chicago July 10-15, and to make it more convenient SCLS has contracted with Van Galder Bus for transportation to and from Chicago. Space is still available, so book your seat today.
Our charter 56-passenger coach is equipped with a restroom, allowing us to drive directly to the McCormick Place from Madison. Please bring your own beverage and food needs for the morning trip. On the evening return trip, we will stop at a convenient fast food restaurant to allow you to purchase food. You will also want to plan for additional personal expenses while visiting the exhibits.
Registration is limited to SCLS public library members, including staff, trustees and Friends of the Library, and SCLS staff. If space permits, spouses, MALC member library staff, and members of other library systems are welcome. Priority will be given to SCLS member public library staff. The registration deadline is Monday, May 18, 2009.
There are several travel options available, so visit www.scls.info/ce/alabus.html for more information, where you also can register for the bus. SCLS public library staff may use CE Grant funds to cover the cost, and these grant applications must be submitted July 1, 2009.
Free tickets available for the Newbery/Caldecott/Wilder Banquet at ALA Conference
Thanks to the generous support of Marshall Cavendish, The ALA’s New Member Round Table (NMRT) is able to offer three tickets to the Newbery/Caldecott/Wilder Banquet at the ALA Annual Conference. Tickets are $94 each, which would be out of the financial reach of most NMRT members if it weren't for the generosity of Marshall Cavendish.
Any NMRT member who is not currently serving on the Marshall Cavendish Award Committee may enter. Just write a short essay (250 words) telling us why you want to attend the Newbery/Caldecott/Wilder Banquet and how you feel you would benefit.
Submit your information and essay on the NMRT Award page by May 31, 2009. For more information, contact the award committee chair, Laura Carscaddon.
All nominations will be acknowledged, and the winners will be notified by email no later than June 15 so they may attend the reception at the ALA Annual Conference.
ALA screencast details potential ARRA library funding
The ALA Washington Office has posted a 10-minute screencast detailing potential areas for library funding available in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Available at www.wo.ala.org/districtdispatch/?p=2660, it provides a good summary on how libraries can benefit from the stimulus funding.
Additional information about stimulus funding is available from the DLTCL website.
