Order your free 2008 SLP school visit video now
In preparation for the 2008 Summer Library Program -- Catch the Reading Bug -- we are again creating a school visit video that will be made available free to our member libraries. This year’s footage was videotaped March 18 at the Rosemary Garfoot Public Library in Cross Plains.
To obtain single or multiple copies of the 2008 SLP School Visit Video, simply complete the form at www.scls.info/pr/slp/2008_video/. We will customize your library’s copy with your program dates, a photo of your library, and photo of your SLP staff members. We’ll add to this a voice-over that will run at the beginning and end of the video. The information requested on the form is needed to create a custom video for your library, so please answer all questions.
Remember to submit requests for reimbursement from adjacent counties
Last week information about requesting reimbursement from adjacent counties was sent to all eligible SCLS member libraries. To receive reimbursement from adjacent counties by March 1, 2009, you must provide the following information to the clerks of those counties by July 1, 2008. All are available in your state annual report:
- the number of loans in 2007 from your library to residents of that county, who live outside municipalities with libraries.
- your library’s total 2007 circulation.
- your library’s total 2007 operating expenditures (excluding any expenditures paid with federal funds).
Statements requesting reimbursement must be sent to the county clerks of adjacent counties by July 1, 2008. More information is available at www.scls.info/management/cross/index.html.
If you did not receive any information about payment to your library, and your library is not listed at www.scls.info/management/cross/documents/alllibsamts07VALUES.xls, your library not entitled to reimbursement.
If you have any questions about reimbursements from adjacent counties, contact Cheryl Becker.
Information database promotional fliers available free of charge
SCLS recently posted web pages that constitute a new interface to the various online information databases available to librarians and patrons alike. The goal of the redesign is to better help library users find the information they seek, and six printed fliers are available free of charge to promote this new interface.
The new web pages, and the supporting promotional fliers, feature sample questions intended to help users find the resource(s) that will best answer their questions. We’ve created six general categories, from which we direct users to databases with the information they seek. The categories, and their direct URLs, are as follows.
- Business -- www.scls.info/business/
- Consumers -- www.scls.info/consumers/
- Genealogy -- www.scls.info/genealogy/
- Readers -- www.scls.info/readers/
- Students and Teachers -- www.scls.info/education/
- Wellness & Health -- www.scls.info/wellness/
To order your free fliers, contact Mark Ibach and let him know how many of each you’d like. You can view PDFs of the fliers at www.scls.info/pr/databases/. The fliers and web pages are the work of PLAC’s Marketing & PR Advisory Committee.

Use BadgerLink to find songbooks
Since its introduction the BadgerLink Songbook Database has made it easy for users to find songs in books in the DPI Reference and Loan Library’s collection.
Patrons looking for music for a wedding, recital or their own personal enjoyment have found the Songbook Database to be an invaluable tool. A newly added feature makes it easy to see which other libraries participating in WISCAT -- the Wisconsin resource sharing system -- own the books featured in the Songbook Database.
Patrons can print out the WISCAT record for the songbook containing the song they want and take it to their library. If their local library doesn’t own the book they can place an interlibrary loan request for it. The Songbook Database currently includes 40,000 unique records for songs contained in 2,000 separate songbooks. Users can search for a song by title, composer, lyricist or year to discover a book containing the song.
To find that favorite old song of yours in the BadgerLink Songbook Database, go to www.badgerlink.net and scroll to the bottom of the page, then click into the BadgerLink Songbook Database.
If you have questions or want more information, contact the Reference and Loan Library at (888) 542-5543 ([email protected]).
AskAway YouTube contest planned
In an effort help promote AskAway, the Wisconsin statewide AskAway publicity committee will conduct a YouTube video contest for teens. This is a great opportunity for your youth groups to try something new, get some publicity, and win some cash prizes.
To encourage participation, there will be a $150 first prize and a $75 second prize. Entries should be original videos between 30 and 60 seconds long (can be longer) that depict the AskAway service in a positive way; why they use and like it.
More details will be coming soon, but it might be good for teens to start developing potential ideas. The committee also is looking for Young Adult librarians to be judges, so if you’re interested contact Renee Ponzio at [email protected].
