Webinars Galore!

In the last couple of days, I've heard of lots of upcoming webinars (some free and some not) that I thought you might be interested in.

First, you may remember Pat Wagner from Pattern Research. We've had her speak at SCLS a few times over the past few years.  She's working with LLAMA (Library Leadership & Management Association) and has three upcoming webinars

  • The Executive Decision Maker's Secret Weapon - How You Can Make Better Choices with the Use of Graphic Models, Wednesday, October 21, 2-3:30 p.m. CT
  • Learn the Supervisor's Balancing Act - How You Can Bring Out the Best in Your top People Without Micromanagment, Tuesday, November 3, 2-3:30 p.m. CT
  • Make Your Library Dreams Come True - How to Use Project Management Techniques to Write a Strategic Plan, Monday, November 16, 2-3:30 p.m. CT

These webinars cost $39 for LLAMA Members and $49 for others.

Second, The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) is offering a series of FREE Student Sessions in ALA's OPAL auditorium.

  • Hosting a Mock Newbery @ Your Library, Wednesday, October 14, 6 p.m. CST
  • Marketing Your Library on the Web, Wednesday, November 10, 6 p.m. CST
  • Connecting Kids with Great Web Sites, Tuesday, December 8, 7 p.m. CST
  • Getting Your First Library Job: tips from Library Directors, Wednesday, March 17, 2010, 6 pm. CST

Since SCLS isn't using OPAL to deliver progamming anymore, you may need to upgrade the OPAL software (or contact the Help Desk - LINK Libraries).

Finally, came across this listing of 23 Free Webinars for Nonprofits - October 2009 in my Google Reader account today. This is a new blog for me, too - it looks like a good one! Not all of these webinars may appeal to libraries, but if they do try them out!

Enjoy learning at your desk!

Upcoming OPAL Programs

While doing some reading for an upcoming WAPL presentation about OPAL, I came across these two OPAL sessions that may be of interest to you.  They are both presented by Librarian in Black, Sarah Houghton-Jan and will be held in the OPAL Auditorium.  The first, "Online Marketing for Libraries"  is scheduled for Thursday, May 8 at 1 p.m.  The second, "Technology Training and Competencies for Libraries" will be held on Thursday, May 15 at 3 p.m.  Both programs will last approximately 90 minutes. More information can be found on the OPAL web site.  Registration is not required, just enter the OPAL Online Auditorium and enjoy the program.

Good Friday Afternoon!

Here are a few CE items that I learned about this week:

The Wisconsin State Law Library (WSLL) offers classes on a regular basis.  While the main audience for these classes is attorneys, library staff are welcome to attend.  Visit the WSLL website for more information

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association (ALA), is offering four online courses this summer: "Making the Match: Finding the Right Book for the Right Teen at the Right Time," "Pain in the Brain: Adolescent Development and Library Behavior," "Power Programming for Teens," and "Using Electronic Databases with Teens." Classes will take place July 1 to July 30, except for "Making the Match," which runs from July 1 through August 10. Registration opened on May 7, 2007.  (from the YALSA website)

Don't forget about the SCLS CE opportunities!  On June 6, 2007 Sarah Cords presents "It May Be In Public, But It's Still Just Speaking" from 9:30 to 12 noon at South Central Library System Administration Offices.  Then, on June 13, John DeBacher from DPI presents "Library Policy Documents for Effective Library Operations" via our OPAL Room.  For more information and to register, visit the CE Calendar.

Sneak Preview:  Gadget Training at SCLS Administration Offices on July 17 - 19 - more information coming soon!  Hands-on training with a variety of technology gadgets - register early!

Have a great Memorial Day Weekend!

Interview with David Weinberger

On Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at 1 p.m. Central time, OPAL Online will be hosting an interview with David Weinberger, author of Everything is Miscellaneous.  Visit OPAL Online for more information.  No need to register, just click on the title of the program to enter the OPAL Auditorium and participate in the program.

Remember, as of April 18, 2007, anyone using the OPAL meeting room will need to have the new version of OPAL (version 5) installed on their PC.  If you have LINK Pcs, please contact the Automation Help Desk to request the installation.  If at all possible, please give Automation at least two days notice so that it's not an emergency installation.
