Libby Updates & Features

Libby_App_Icon_CircleToday, March 21, 2023, there's a new way to search on Libby. Deep Search allows patrons to discover more content, including titles not yet in our Digital Library. In addition, the new Notify Me feature will let patrons tag items they discover while using Deep Search to be notified if the library adds the item to the collection. OverDrive has a short tutorial (7 minutes) that will demonstrate these features for you and your patrons.

These two features will replace the Recommend to Library (RTL) option that was available on the website version of the Digital Library and the original OverDrive App. Both the Recommend to Library option and the OverDrive App will be sunsetting at the end of April. Patrons using RTL on the website or the app will see messaging directing them to Libby.

If you want to know more about these two features, OverDrive recently hosted a webinar called "Expand Content Discovery and Leverage Patron Interests with Libby."

The next OverDrive Support Course, which will be updated with all the new Libby and Wisconsin's Digital Library changes, is scheduled to start on April 10 and run for five weeks. If you're interested, please register here.

Readers Advisory Series with Becky Spratford

SpratfordBeginning in May, SCLS will be hosting a series of webinars with Readers Advisory Expert, Becky Spratford.

RA for All: Flip the Script and Think Like a Reader, May 17 from 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Register here!

Readers Advisory belongs in every library, no matter its budget. The implementation of this vital service is the responsibility of every staff member-- from pages to directors, from those behind the scenes to the ones on the front lines. This program will remove the mystery behind providing great RA service. Using her “Ten Rules of Basic RA Service” as a guide, Becky Spratford will use your own love of your favorite books to show you how to help any patron find their next great read. It's not as hard as you think. But more importantly, you will learn why a staff that can harness the power of sharing a great read will become a stronger team and improve service to all patrons, especially the hardest to reach ones.

Booktalking Your Way to the Friendliest Library in Town, June 14 from 10:30 a.m. - 12 noon. Register here!

Booktalking is at the heart of what we do with patrons each and every day at the public library. Whether we are sharing books informally at the services desk, presenting a prepared list of books, or posting information online, talking about books is something we do each and every day. It is a core service, but it is also hard to teach. Booktalking is more of an art than a skill, but with the right guidance and some practice, it can go a long way toward engaging your patrons and re-energizing your staff. Join experienced Readers’ Advisory Becky Spratford as she shares the secret behind delivering great book talks, giving you tips and tricks you can begin using right away to hone your own skills. Rediscover the power and joy that comes from sharing books with patrons.

Demystifying Genre, July 12 from 1 - 2:30 p.m. Register here!

Nothing is scarier than trying to help a fan of a genre you yourself don’t enjoy. You want to help that, for example, Romance reader find the perfect book, but you are having trouble knowing where to begin because...eek!... you don’t read Romance. You are afraid they will find out you are a fraud. How can YOU possibly help THEM?!? Never fear, in this program, Readers’ Advisory expert, Becky Spratford, will teach you the basic appeals of the major genres, give you the inside track on what a fan of that genre is most drawn to, and provide you with talking points to get your genre readers to tell you what they want. This program focuses on providing you with a diverse and inclusive list of up-to-date authors with at least 40% of the example titles representing “own voices”. You will leave this session with the confidence and skill to help fans of every genre, regardless of whether or not you have ever read a book in that genre yourself. And that will leave a trail of happy patrons in your wake.

Each of the webinars will be recorded and captioned.

OverDrive Audiobook Update & Sora

Libby21DaysThe WPLC Digital Library Steering Committee recently met and voted to change the maximum loan period for audiobooks to 21 days. Previously, the maximum loan period was 14 days. This is great news for those of us who listen to lots of audiobooks and sometimes needed two loan periods to finish a book.

There are two ways you can make this change. From the desktop version of Digital Library, sign in to your account and then select Settings from My Account. The first setting is your loan periods and you can select your default loan period of 7, 14, or 14 days for ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines or 3, 5, or 7 days for video. On the Libby app, you can change your loan period when you borrow a title. The loan period you select will now be your default loan period for future checkouts.

On another audiobook note, the Audiobook SYNC program is about halfway through the season. The program uses the Sora App (also by OverDrive) and recently some users noticed that the previous SYNC titles weren't accessible. To fix this, SYNC help says to log out of the Sora app and log in again. This should solve the problem (it did for me!). If it doesn't, the recommendation is to delete and reinstall the app.

Happy Listening!

Readers Advisory & Genre Training

Library_reads_logo_websiteAs I was reading Becky Spratford's blog today, RA for All, I came across her article from today about NoveList and LibraryReads joining forces to offer genre training in 2019. The first webinar is coming up on January 15 and will cover Science Fiction - my weakest genre so I'll be signing up! Registration is open. Future genres are Crime, Mystery, and Thriller, Fantasy, Romance, and Horror. See this article from NoveList for all the details.

We had Becky Spratford present a series of webinars in 2016 and you can watch the recordings anytime:

  • Demystifying Genre: How to Help Every Type of Reader
  • Readers Advisory: Bridging the Digital and Physical Divide
  • Rethinking Adult Programming & Displays
