I've been a NoveList fan and user for a long time - it's one of my favorite online resources! One of the reasons that it's so good is that it was created and developed by a fellow librarian specializing in readers' advisory (RA). Check out the history of the company.
NoveList is the ultimate RA tool for all ages and genres. Need help picking the next book for your book group? Finished all of Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak mysteries and want to read something similar? Find the answers to these and many other questions in NoveList.
I conducted a search using "Kate Shugak" as my keyword. You can also search by author, location, or any other keyword(s) you like. Here's a tour of what you may see on your results screen:
- Toolbar at the top includes
- Lists & Articles: Author Read-Alikes, Book Discussion Guides, Feature Articles, Grab & Go Book Lists, and Picture Book Extenders
- Professional Toolbox: Readers Advisory and Working with Youth - resources directed at helping librarians improve their skills
- Spotlight on...Award Winners and Genres -- Looking for the latest LibraryReads list? Check here first.
- Default results list is by books and you can use the tabs to see other information about your topic
- Series listings with link to the series in order (one of my favorite things!)
- Title, Author, and Series read-alikes articles
- Links into the catalogs of SCLS member libraries to see if your library owns a copy
- Options to refine your results by audience, date, and more
- Sign in option to create an account and save items to a folder (we'll cover this in more depth in a later post)
- Print, email, share, or export your items
Now it's your turn. Explore NoveList a little bit more and answer this short quiz. Correct answers will be shown after you submit yours.
What you need to know
We have three different NoveList products for SCLS libraries. NoveList covers fiction for all ages. NoveList K-8 is geared towards younger readers and covers both fiction and nonfiction. Both NoveList and NoveList K-8 are available to all Wisconsin residents via BadgerLink. If accessing BadgerLink resources like NoveList and NoveList K-8 outside of your library, you may be asked to log in with your library card.
NoveList Plus expands into nonfiction and is available to the 40 SCLS subscribing libraries. If accessing NoveList Plus from outside a subscribing SCLS library, you'll be asked to log in with your library card number from a subscribing library.
