Picture Book Views of Technology

Ever notice how computers, cell phones, and gadgets are nowhere to be seen in picture books?  Children's author Erica Perl takes a look at why -- and finds some exceptions to the rule -- in this slideshow:

"The Mismatch of Technology and Picture Books"

"Addy Will Know"

Coke and Mentos Fountain

John D. wrote of the Coke and Mentos Fountain at EepyBird.com:

Stare Down Sally is a game from Stairwell Studios that has been around for a dog's age in Internet time - but that doesn't make it any less unsettling!

Wacky Website: Stray Shopping Cart Project

I thought the Stray Shopping Cart Project would be especially appealing to y'all library types. It is a comprehensive (some would say obsessive) study of the ways in which shopping carts escape their retail habitats. From the home page:

If you quickly want to get a sense of what the System is all about, click on CLASS A: FALSE STRAYS or CLASS B: TRUE STRAYS. If you are simply interested in seeing a wide variety of shopping carts in diverse situations, go directly to SELECTED SPECIMENS. And if you are interested in seeing vandalized shopping carts submerged in water check out SITE STUDY: SCAJAQUADA CREEK.

If you are sometimes enchanted by everyday objects, this site is for you! Found via WMQT's Weird Web Site of the Day.

Wacky Website: Advertising Slogan Generator

It's the last Friday of the month....and you all know what that means....it's Wacky Website day!

If you've got something to sell, no matter what it is, the "Advertising Slogan Generator" will come in handy.  There are only 4 steps to use it:

1.  Go to http://thesurrealist.co.uk/slogan.cgi
2.  Put in what you are trying to sell in the "Word" box.
3.  Click "Sloganize"
4.  Laugh at the funny and sometimes oddly appropriate things that appear.

I tried it with AskAway, our virtual reference service.  "Uh-oh, Better Get AskAway" was pretty appropriate, while "Thatsa some spicy AskAway" just made me laugh!

(Thanks to Nancy McClements, UW-Madison, for sharing this one...)

Wacky Website: Twiggy

..just in time for the Fourth of July, it's Twiggy The Water skiing Squirrel!

Wacky Website: Roadside Art Online

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

In honor of the beginning of summer, I present the Wacky Website of the Month:

Roadsite Art Online

...perfect for wacky roadtrip planning!

Did you know that Wisconsin is the "Roadside Genius" state (at least according to William Swislow.)

He writes, "Wisconsin doesn't have a lock on spectacular roadside visionary creations...But per square mile, the quality and number of its art environments are unmatched."

So click on "Visit Environments,"  scroll down a bit, click on "Wisconsin: The Roadside Genius State" and celebrate our Roadside Genius-ness!

Wacky Website(s): The page that turns you into a cabbage/Signs of Life

The Page that turns you into a cabbage is, quite honestly, the most ridiculous website I have ever seen.  Let me know if you agree!

(You can comment on this post ...just click the "Comments" link below.)

[A little warning:  This is a geocities site, so you'll get a bunch of pop-ups if you visit it.]

Because The Page that turns you into a cabbage is so ridiculous, here's a 2nd Wacky Website for the month:

Check out Signs of Life ...it's a site that collects pictures of signs that, "reveal our humanity", which translates to signs with weird spelling or phrasing or placement or alternate meanings.  It's fun, and you can submit your own pictures to the collection...

Wacky Website: Name that Candybar!

I am the first to admit that I have a serious sugar and chocolate addiction.  If there's a new candybar on the market, I've probably tried it.

This is why I love Name that Candybar! ...and if you like candy, you'll have fun playing it, too.

Here's how it works:  You see picture of  a cross-section of a candy bar, and, from that, you have to guess what candy bar it is.  It's challenging, particularly the Canadian candy bars!  I was a little alarmed that I only missed two!!!
