Scouting Out New Books

In 2011, there were almost 350,000 books published (according to Bowker) and that number doesn’t include the over 211,000 titles that were self-published! How do we figure out which books are going to be the ones that our patrons will ask for without reading 24/7?

There are a couple new and some not-so-new tools out there that can help. LibraryThing, Goodreads, and Edelweiss are just a few of the sites that Jean will cover in this fast-paced, interactive webinar. Come prepared to share your favorite book blog or website with the group. We’ll post all the sites after the webinar.

Teaching Visualization: Sticky Search Skills for Library Users

Ever teach users to search, only to find they’d forgotten everything the next day? Search tools offer many advanced features, but literate users already possess power searchers’ most important asset: a feel for language. Tapping into that knowledge to visualize ideal sources increases success with article databases and search engines. Learn how to use visualization techniques in your searches, and teach library patrons to increase their success in electronic environments.

Tasha is a professional librarian with 15 years of experience as a research skills trainer, and is committed to decreasing frustration and increasing access among researchers of all ages. Since 2010, Tasha has been a visiting scholar at Google, where she collaborates with librarians and other educators who help people do better quality research and find the information they desire.

Reel to Real

Originally presented March 29, 2012 at 10 a.m. with Lynne Blinkenberg and Cindy Fesemyer from Wisconsin Public Television presenting.

There is an abundance of thought-provoking films telling the stories of Wisconsin available on Wisconsin Public Television, and libraries can build community programs around these films: Green Fire (Aldo Leopold), Mildred Fish Harnack, Jerry Apps and Wisconsin taverns. In most community programs, participants will view the film together at the library then engage in a discussion about the content and what it means for their particular community. You will learn how to plan an event, promote it, and how to facilitate the discussion or select a facilitator from your community.

Accessing & Understanding 2010 Census Data

The numbers have been collected, and now it's time to start making sense of the 2010 US Census data. On Friday, March 25 at 10 a.m., join a webinar that will help explain the importance of Census data, especially as it relates to congressional apportionment and state legislative redistricting. You'll also hear examples of how to use Census data, discussion about when to use the information, an explanation of data search techniques, and plenty of time for questions. The presenters will be Ellisa Johnson, National Partnership Coordinator, and Stephen Laure, Information Specialist, with the U.S. Census Bureau, Chicago Region.
