There is an abundance of thought-provoking films telling the stories of Wisconsin available on Wisconsin Public Television, and libraries can build community programs around these films: Green Fire (Aldo Leopold), Mildred Fish Harnack, Jerry Apps and Wisconsin taverns. In most community programs, participants will view the film together at the library then engage in a discussion about the content and what it means for their particular community. You will learn how to plan an event, promote it, and how to facilitate the discussion or select a facilitator from your community.

What Should I Say?

Jamie is the continuing education, youth and public information coordinator for the Nicolet Federated Library System. She is also an adjunct instructor for Lakeland College in "Business and Professional Rhetoric," a course required of all accounting, business and marketing majors.

We are writing, tweeting, instant messaging and texting more than ever. Join in for a fun, interactive webinar where you will learn tips and tricks to improve your written communication!

In this webinar, we will discuss:

- Why you should use short, familiar words
- Why you should avoid acronyms, sexist language, negative words and "rubber stamps"
- How to write "stronger"
- How to convey "bad news" (there is a right way to do this!)
- Good email and text messaging etiquette

Have you taken a good look at your library’s policies lately? Do they seem to be from a different era? Are you encountering new circumstances that your existing policies don’t address? Do you find yourself thinking “they didn’t teach me how to handle this in library school!”? Then maybe it’s time to make sure your policies are well-crafted to deal situations libraries are facing today. We'll look at such policies as challenged material, patron privacy, and behavior.

Accessing & Understanding 2010 Census Data

The numbers have been collected, and now it's time to start making sense of the 2010 US Census data. On Friday, March 25 at 10 a.m., join a webinar that will help explain the importance of Census data, especially as it relates to congressional apportionment and state legislative redistricting. You'll also hear examples of how to use Census data, discussion about when to use the information, an explanation of data search techniques, and plenty of time for questions. The presenters will be Ellisa Johnson, National Partnership Coordinator, and Stephen Laure, Information Specialist, with the U.S. Census Bureau, Chicago Region.

Finding Local/Regional Resources for the Elderly and Their Caregivers

This program will identify and locate contacts offering local/regional information, services and support for the elderly and their caregivers.

This program is made possible by an LSTA grant which is made available through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The Institute’s mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas.
