Mentoring, Government Info, and Teen Literature

I'm cleaning out my email in-box and have a few webinars and classes to share with you:

Ten Tips for Effective Mentoring Programs with Paul Signorelli, Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 1 p.m. CDT, presented by LE@D.

The most important resource a library or any other institution or business has is its people. New employees need orientation. When hiring freezes trigger cross-training, everyone will want support. A maturing profession is leaving the workplace, and the knowledge of decades has to be captured and transmitted. How can you help your institution create a mentoring program that helps bridge generational and cultural differences and support employees during periods of stress and change? How can you help build mentor and protégé partnerships that elicit the best in productivity, workplace relationships, and career development?

Cost = Free, Registration required.

Accessing and Using Free Government Information, an Infopeople online course, begins on May 3 and continue through May 30, 2011.

Did you know that governments are the largest publishers of information in the world? Beyond political and legal information, governments publish information on health, travel, history, business, science, and much, much more. Most importantly, governments make this information available at no cost. With government publications moving away from print and onto the Internet, it is even easier to access this wealth of free information.

Cost = $150, SCLS member public libraries may use CE Grant funds to attend.

Cutting the Red Tape: Finding and Using E-Government Tools and Resources Facilitatied eCourse with Diane Kovacs, begins April 4 and continues through April 29, 2011.

During this four-week eCourse (accessible 24/7), you will learn how to quickly find government documents and help patrons file and pay taxes online, locate Medicare/Medicaid provideers and reviews, apply for and track student loans, monitor ongoing legislation as well as codified law and court rulings, and much more.

Cost = $200, SCLS member public libraries may use CE Grant funds to attend.

Teen Literature Update 2011, an Infopeople webinar, scheduled for Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 2 p.m Central Time.

The world of young adult literature is an inherently dynamic one and one that, in the last decade, has become among the most active in publishing. Each new publishing season brings a plethora of new titles, new forms, and new formats, many of which require new methods of evaluation. Keeping up with all of these changes and the new titles flooding the market can be a full-time job. This webinar will help students identify new trends and the best new titles and resources for collection development.

Cost = Free, no registration required. Visit this site to join the webinar on the day of the event.
