Policies and Circumstances: Things I Didn't Learn in Library School

Have you taken a good look at your library’s policies lately? Do they seem to be from a different era? Are you encountering new circumstances that your existing policies don’t address? Do you find yourself thinking “they didn’t teach me how to handle this in library school!”? Then maybe it’s time to make sure your policies are well-crafted to deal situations libraries are facing today. We'll cover topics such as collection development/challenges,patron confidentiality, search warrants and more.

Online Conference: Going Green @ Your Library 2

If you're not heading to the fall WLA Conference in Wisconsin Dells, check out this online conference scheduled for Wednesday, November 3:

Going Green 2 will offer the latest information on environmentally conscious librarianship, from working green to teaching green. The theme of working green will focus on green building, IT, and maintenance practices implemented in libraries. Teaching green will emphasize ways that your library can show others in your community through reference services, programming, and good example how to be green.

Registration is required and the cost for this online conference is $129. SCLS public library staff may use CE Grant funds to attend.

Succession planning is a form of risk management, and in order to be effective, particularly in an emergency situation, the process should start before you need it. What should the library do when someone is soliciting for charity, or selling services or products on library grounds? Jobs and Workforce Recovery, November 9 - December 6, 2010, cost $150

Course Description: This online course will give you the knowledge and skills needed to help library users who are unemployed or under-employed. You will be reading case studies, completing assignments, and participating in online discussions. By understanding the stages of the job search process, and the needs of the unemployed, you will be able to proactively identify resources in the library and in the community. Experienced employment counselor Dana Lee will provide resources and practical tips that you can use immediately with job seekers, empowering them to take ownership of the process as they prepare, research, apply, and interview for jobs. Learners will explore print, web, and community resources for job seekers, as well as workshops on job-hunting skills and related topics.

SCLS member public library staff may use CE Grant funds to pay for the courses.
